Golden Bears Below Par After Round One of Thunderbird

April 13, 2007

TEMPE, Ariz. - In a powerhouse field which features eight teams ranked in the top 40 in the nation, the California men's golf team has battled its way to a tie for eighth place after one round in the 35th annual Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Arizona State University at Karsten Golf Course. Round two will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday as the Bears will tee off with UNLV (seventh nationally) and Arizona (23rd). The event wraps up after Sunday's third round.

Oregon is leading the event with an 11-under 277, followed by USC at 278 and Texas Tech at 279. Arizona State is in fourth place at 281 while Oklahoma and Texas A&M are tied for fifth at 282.

'Oregon played great; again it's a very strong field,' Cal head coach Steve Desimone said. 'We didn't finish real strong. We had a chance to move into the top four or five, but let it slip the last three or four holes. Overall, it was a good first round, hopefully we have even better things to come.

Leading the way for the Golden Bears is junior Michael Jensen, the team's top finisher in each of the last two tournaments. Jensen fired a two-under 70 to tie for 11th place after day one. The Bears have a pair of golfers, sophomore George Gandranta and freshman Chris Jensen, tied for 31st at an even-par 72. Chris is the younger brother of Michael and is playing in his first spring tournament.

'Michael Jensen continues to play really good golf,' Desimone said. 'He didn't do anything spectacular; it was sort of a `Ho-hum, I'll shoot two-under.' We really like those kind of rounds. His younger brother Chris was in the lineup for the first time in a while and he did a lot of good things for us. It was good to have him making some major contributions.'

Senior Michael Wilson was also solid with a one-over 73 to tie for 44th place, while freshman Andrey Mindirgasov rounded out the field for the Bears with a 75.
