TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 8 Sun Devil Softball team made a short night of their Pac-10 home opener, beating the Cal Bears 8-0 in five innings Friday night in Tempe. The game saw home runs from Kaitlin Cochran and Ashley Muenz as well as a one-hit complete game shutout from Katie Burkhart who fanned 12 Bears on the night. The Sun Devils improve to 37-10 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

The Sun Devils jumped on the Bears right in the first as lead-off walks to Jessica Mapes and Kaitlin Cochran only to see Mapes plated on an RBI double from Bianca Cruz who took a 0-2 pitch deep to the left field wall. Ashley Muenz dug in next batting .270 with two on and no outs to launch her fourth home run of the season over center field to push the score to 4-0 after one.

ASU added on two more in the second off two singles and a Bear error to put the score at 6-0 after two. Kaitlin Cochran finished off the rally in the fourth inning as she brought home a lead-off walk to Jessica Mapes with a two-run bomb to right center, her 12th home run of the season.

Katie Burkhart wrapped it up for the Devils keeping Cal to just one hit and fanning 12 batters on the night. The Sun Devils return to Pac-10 action tomorrow night as they host the No. 17 Stanford Cardinal in Tempe at Farrington Stadium with a start time of 7 p.m.
