April 13, 2007
TEMPE, Ariz. - Ike Davis drove in three runs to key a five-run fourth inning as No. 12 Arizona State defeated Washington State 8-3 in the opener of a three-game Pacific-10 Conference series Friday evening at Packard Stadium.
The Sun Devils (27-10, 8-2) opened the scoring in the third as they took advantage of two walks, two singles and a Cougar error. Eric Sogard brought home the first run with an RBI single while Petey Paramore's sacrifice fly made it 2-0. The lead grew to 8-0 in the fourth as ASU put up five runs, the big hit being Davis' three-run double. Paramore added an RBI single and the final run of the frame came via a wild pitch.
The Cougars (16-15, 1-6) broke into the scoring column in the eighth inning as Jared Prince drove home Travis Coulter for the RBI single. Coulter led off the inning with a single to left before Prince's single up the middle, his second hit of the game, brought him home. WSU tacked on two runs in the ninth courtesy of three straight hits. Nick Hall and Simi Reynolds lined solid singles before Cody Bartlett doubled home Hall with the Cougars second run. Coulter's RBI groundout brought home Reynolds to close out the scoring.
Jayson Miller started for WSU and worked into the third inning as his record fell to 2-2. Miller was the first of six pitchers on the evening for the Cougars. Offensively Prince led the way with two of WSU's eight hits on the evening.
Sun Devil starter Mike Leake saw his record improve to 8-1 this season as he fired six innings of three-hit shutout ball before giving way to Jason Mitchell. ASU collected nine hits on the evening, well below their average of 13 per game entering the contest. Brett Wallace, Kiel Roling and Sogard each had two for the nation's No.2 hitting team.
These same two teams meet against Saturday evening at Packard Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
