Eight-ranked UCLA Rowing Edged Out at Stanford Invitational

April 14, 2007

Redwood City, Calif. - The eighth-ranked UCLA women's varsity eight crew was edged out by No.13-ranked University of Virginia and No.12-ranked Central Florida boats in the first day of the Windermere Stanford Invitational at Redwood Shores. The Bruins second varsity eight also fell to UVA but managed to overmatch the UCF crew in their second race of the day.

In their first race of the day, the eighth-ranked Bruin V8 squad rowed a tight race against the No.13-ranked Cavalier crew after falling behind early in the race. The furious comeback effort brought the Bruins back within striking distance in the last 500 meters but it wasn't enough to match the UVA time of 6 minutes and 58.53 seconds. The Bruins finished close behind at 7:00.18.

Against No.12 Central Florida University, UCLA's varsity eight relinquished an early lead as UCF used a mid-race flurry to surpass and hold off the Bruins in photo-finish. UCF finished the back-and-forth race in 6:54.19, narrowly escaping the Bruins' 6:54.80 finish.

The UCLA second varsity eight was simply overmatched by their Cavalier counterparts in their first race of the regatta, finishing three boat-lengths behind UVA. The Bruins quickly turned their focus to Central Florida, registering a strong performance in an impressive win against Golden Knights. UCLA used a consistent effort to build on an early lead and pull away from UCF, finishing in 7:43.94.

UCLA's varsity four had a rough time against the UVA boat, giving up an open-water lead to the Cavaliers half-way through the race. The Bruins could not do enough to close the gap late in the race, finishing more than 26 seconds behind the Virginia with a time of 8:04.23. The Bruins looked to get over their tough start against UCF, giving the Knights all they could handle early in the race before running out of steam in the final leg of the contest.

The Bruin novice eight boat matched up against Notre Dame in their only race of the regatta, falling to the Fighting Irish in a late evening match-up. The Bruin boat contested Notre Dame through the finish line, finishing closely behind the ND boat (7:32.48) with a time of 7:35.28.

In tomorrow's events, UCLA's varsity 8, second varsity 8, and varsity 4 boats will be pitted against No.16 Notre Dame from 9 am until noon.
