Frederick, Swango Earn NCAA Regional Qualifying Marks
April 14, 2007
WALNUT, Calif. - Junior Norris Frederick and senior Myrriah Swango each earned NCAA Regional qualifying marks Saturday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., continuing a busy weekend for Washington's track and field teams. In addition to their competition at Mt. SAC, Washington also had athletes in action Saturday at Cal's Brutus Hamilton Invitational, and earlier this week sent athletes to the California Invitational Multi-Events in nearby Azusa, Calif.
Roosevelt High School graduate Frederick, an All-American in both the high- and long jumps indoors in March, began his quest for a fifth-career All-America honor Saturday with a best clearance of 6-feet, 10 ¾ inches in the high jump at Mt. SAC, good for fourth in the outstanding collegiate field.
Swango, meanwhile, moved to No. 7 in UW history with her first-ever regional qualifying performance in the pole vault, topping 12-5 ½ to tie for fourth.
Those performances bring UW's total number of NCAA qualifiers this season to 29, just one shy of the team's total from the entire 2006 campaign. Just three meets remain for Washington before the 2007 Pac-10 Championships at Oregon, including the always-thrilling UW-WSU Dual at Husky Stadium in two weeks' time.
