No. 13 Bruins Upset No. 8 Golden Bears, 4-3

April 14, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Bruin sophomore Anna-Viktoria Lind won the biggest match of her college career on Saturday, registering a victory in the final singles match to help the No. 13 UCLA women's tennis team pull off a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over No. 8 Cal at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who lost 7-0 to the Golden Bears earlier in the year in Berkeley, improve to 14-7 overall and 5-2 in the Pac-10. Cal falls to 19-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.

UCLA set the tone for Saturday's eventual upset in doubles play, as the Bruins posted victories in all three matches to secure the point. The biggest win for UCLA came at court No. 1, where Ashley Joelson and Riza Zalameda upset the nation's second-ranked team of Susie Babos/Zsuzsanna Fodor, 8-5.

Knowing the Bruins needed only three singles wins to pull off the upset, Cal began to battle back. The Bears evened the score when No. 19 Nina Henkel registered a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Joelson at court No. 3. Cal then took a 2-1 lead moments later, as Claire Ilcinkas notched a 6-3, 6-0 win over Stephanie Wetmore at court No. 6. Things began to look even more bleak for the Bruins when the Bears moved to within a point of clinching the match following Stephanie Kusano's, 6-4, 6-1 win over Elizabeth Lumpkin at court No. 4.

Despite being down 3-1, UCLA actually held the advantage, as the Bruins had won the first set and were leading in the second set in the three remaining matches. Next to finish was court No. 1, where Zalameda, ranked No. 22, upset the fourth-ranked Babos, 6-3, 6-3. That win was big for Zalameda, as Babos is the defending NCAA singles champion. Another upset for the Bruins came at court No. 2, where 49th-ranked Tracy Lin was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over No. 13 Fodor.

Lin's victory set the stage for Lind's match-clinching heroics back at court No. 5, as she downed No. 124 Marion Ravelojaona, 6-2, 6-4, giving the Bruins their first top 10 win of the season.

UCLA has just two regular-season matches remaining, as the Bruins host No. 21 Pepperdine on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. before traveling to No. 7 USC on Saturday at Noon.
