Rindal Drive In Five In 12-6 Husky Win

April 14, 2007

SEATTLE - Senior first baseman Curt Rindal drove in five runs with three hits as the Washington baseball team picked up a second straight win, 12-6, over UC Riverside Saturday at Husky Ballpark.

With the score tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth, Rindal came through with a two-out, bases-loaded single to drive in two runs, his fourth and fifth RBI of the day. The Huskies (18-15) never lost that lead. UCR fell to 21-14 with the loss.

Husky reliever Brandon McKerney (2-0) picked up the win, throwing one and two-thirds hitless innings. UCR reliever Stephen Penney (3-2) took the loss, allowing six runs in an inning-plus of work.

The Huskies opened the game with two runs in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Michael Burgher walked and stole second before scoring on a two-out double from Rindal. Ty Rasmussen followed by belting a 3-0 pitch into the left-field corner for another double, scoring Rindal.

Riverside got on the board in the third inning when Jaime Pedroza and Mark Samuelson connected on back-to-back doubles, the second driving in a run. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, lefty Tyler Cheney came on in relief of freshman starter Cam Nobles. Cheney walked Ben Price to force in one run and a single from Kyle Barratt drove in two more, putting the Highlanders in front, 4-2.

Washington came back to take a lead with four runs in the fifth. With Burgher at third and Jake Rife at second with two outs, Rindal picked up his second and third RBI of the game with a single to the left-center gap, tying the game at 4-4. After Rindal's single, Rasmussen hit his second double to put two on for catcher Joey Dunn, whose single through the left side drove in a pair, putting the UW on top, 6-4.

UCR got back to even in the top of the sixth when Carl Uhl reached on an error and eventually came in to score on a single from Pedroza. With Brandon McKerney on in place of fellow reliever Harrison Bishop, runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch and a Samuelson groundout drove in Joey Gonzales to tie the game at 6-6.

However, Rindal came through once more in the bottom of the sixth, breaking the tie with his two-run single. In the seventh, Dunn led off with a long home run to left, his third of the season and the Dawgs went on to score four runs in the seventh to put the game away.

Aside from Rindal's three hits and five RBI, the Huskies also had Dunn go 2-for-3 with three RBI while Burgher was 2-for-3 with three runs and three stolen bases.

The series concludes Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game. Live video and live stats will be available at gohuskies.com.
