Arizona State Earns 8-2 Victory Over Cardinal

Tempe, Ariz. - Despite taking an early two-run lead, the Stanford softball team fell 8-2 to the Arizona State Sun Devils todayat Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. Freshman Alissa Haber went 1-for-2 and scored both Stanford runs, but theeffort wasnot enough to prevent the Cardinal for losing its third-straight contest. Stanford drops to 27-12 overall and 3-6in the Pac-10, while ASU climbs to 39-10, 5-3 Pac-10.
The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, after two walks and a single by Shannon Koplitz loaded the baseswith one out. Maddy Coon stepped up and earned the RBI, drilling a sacrifice fly to deep left field that easilyscored Haber.
In the the third inning, Haber scored a second run for the Cardinal, dropping her third homerun of the season overthe center field wall to give Stanford a 2-0 lead.
The Sun Devils started their comeback in the third inning, however. A walk and a single put two on base, bothcame into scoring position on an infield grounder and lead runner Michelle Smith scored on a wild pitch to get thehome team on the board.
In the fifth inning, Arizona State was back again. Lead-off batter Rhiannon Baca was hit by a pitch and moved tosecond on a sacrifice hit by Jessica Mapes. After Kaitlin Cochran was intentionally walked, Bianca Cruz singled upthe middle to score Baca. Another single by Ashley Muenz scored Cochran, giving the Sun Devils the lead, 3-2.
A lead-off homerun by Mindy Cowles in the sixth inning added one more to the tally, but Arizona State wasn'tfinished. The squad proceeded to load the bases with a single and two walks before Bianca Cruz hammered a grandslam to left field.
Stanford returns home to continue conference action next weekend, taking on No. 14/15 UCLA on Friday night andNo. 12/16 Washington Saturday and Sunday.
