April 15, 2007

CORVALLIS, ORE. - Oregon State broke a 3-3 tie by scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings as California dropped a 5-3 decision to No. 8 ranked and defending national champion Beavers Sunday at Coleman Field/Goss Stadium. The Golden Bears had scored two runs in the top of the first inning when sophomore center fielder Michael Capbarat hit a home run to right field. Sophomore first baseman David Cooper followed with a double down the left field line, and later scored on junior designated hitter Jordan Karnofsky's two-out single to right center field.

Cal dropped to 18-19 overall and 3-6 in the Pac-10. OSU improved to 28-8 and 4-5 in conference. The Beavers won 1-0 Friday night, but the Bears came back to shut out OSU, 4-0 (first time Oregon State had been shut out since 2003, and the first time OSU had been shut out at Coleman Field/Goss Stadium since 2002), on Saturday before losing the series final, 5-3, Sunday.

After Cal had scored two runs in the top of the first inning off of Beaver starter Daniel Turpin (3.0 innings, six hits, two runs, one walk), OSU scored two runs in the bottom of the second on Drew George's two-run homer to right field off of Bear junior right-hander Nick Nunez (2-2, 3.0 innings, three hits, four runs, three earned runs, four walks, one strikeout). The Beavers added another run in the third inning when Chris Hopkins reached first on a fielding error by Cal shortstop Michael Brady. Hopkins later scored the unearned run when Mike Lissman grounder to second allowed him to score.

Cal came back to tie the contest, 3-3, with a run in the fourth. Freshman right fielder Blake Smith led off the inning with a single to left, advanced to second on a wild pitch by OSU's winning pitcher, reliever Anton Maxwell (3-0, 4.0 innings, two hits, one run, no walks, three strikeouts), advanced to third on senior third baseman Stephen Carlson's sacrifice bunt, and scored on sophomore catcher Charlie Cutler's ground out to second.

The Beavers took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning when Scott Santschi led off with a double down the left field line and ended up scoring on Hopkins' ground out to shortstop. OSU added another insurance run in the fifth when catcher Mitch Canham led off the inning with an infield single to second. He was advanced to second by Lissman's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Jason Ogata's single to left for the final 5-3 margin.

Smith, Karnofsky and Cooper finished the day with two hits apiece for the Bears.

The Bears next host Bay Area rival Stanford in a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, Apr. 20 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Saturday, Apr. 21 and Sunday, Apr. 22 contests begin at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
