Huskies Finish Fifth At U.S. Intercollegiate

STANFORD, Calif. - The 32nd-ranked Washington men's golf team carded a final round score of 8-over 288 to finish fifth at the U.S. Intercollegiate hosted by Stanford at Stanford Golf Course, Sunday. The Huskies ended the two-day tournament at 26-over 886, notching their third top-10 finish in the last four events.
Top-ranked Stanford and 43rd-ranked Minnesota dominated the field, tying atop the leaderboard at 2-under 838 - 22 strokes ahead of third-place Oregon State - but the Cardinal clinched the tiebreaker that was calculated by including the throw-out score for each day. Oregon State finished at 20-over 860 and UC Irvine finished fourth at 22-over 862.
Washington was bolstered by the play of senior Alex Prugh who shot an even-par 70 in Sunday's final round to finish in a tie for 12th at 3-over 213. Prugh sank five birdies including two on his last three holes. He carded rounds of 70 and 73 in the first two rounds, Saturday.
Junior Zach Bixler moved up in the standings from 32nd to 24th after the final round shooting a 1-over 71. Bixler ended the tournament at 7-over 217, just one stroke ahead of teammate Chris Killmer. Killmer tied for 30th at 8-over 218, carding a 2-over 72 Sunday.
After shooting back-to-back rounds of 2-over 72 on Saturday, freshman Darren Wallace fell back into a tie for 51st carding a 10-over 80 in the final round. Senior Erik Olson rounded out the Husky lineup, finishing in a tie for 58th (16-over 226).
Stanford's Rob Grube claimed medalist honors by two shots (8-under 202) followed by Minnesota's Bronson LaCassie (6-under 204) and Cardinal teammate Daniel Lim (4-under 206).
The U.S. Intercollegiate marked the Huskies' last regular season tournament before they head to Eugene, Ore., for the Pac-10 Championships hosted by Oregon, April 23-25.
