Lodree, Roth Move Into NCAA's Top-Five
April 15, 2007
WALNUT, Calif. - Washington senior hurdler Ashley Lodree and freshman pole vaulter Scott Roth each achieved marks among the five-best by collegiate athletes in their events this season Sunday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., capping a busy week of competition for UW's track and field teams.
In addition to the large group competing Friday through Sunday at Mt. SAC, Washington also had a sizeable squad Saturday at Cal's Brutus Hamilton Invitational, and sent two athletes to the California Invitational Multi-Events in Azusa, Calif., earlier in the week.
Four-time All-American Lodree moved to third in the collegiate hurdles rankings (again, among marks entering the weekend) with a wind-aided time of 13.06 seconds in the elite Invitational heat of the 100-meter hurdles. Lodree's time earned the Richmond, Calif., native a fourth-place finish behind world silver medalist Jenny Adams (12.75), USC All-American Candice Davis (12.88) and 2004 Olympian Angela Whyte of Canada (12.88).
Lodree's time is the sixth-fastest by an American so far in 2007, and is among the top-10 marks in the world this year.
'Ashley didn't reach that kind of a time until the regional meet last year, so she's already a full month or more ahead in her development this season,' said fifth-year head coach Greg Metcalf. 'That, more than anything, gets me excited to see what she's going to do next.'
Roth's mark of 17-feet, 3 ½ inches, meanwhile, has been bettered by just four other collegians this year, and tied Washington State's Tyson Byers for fifth in the meet's elite Invitational flight of the pole vault - one spot ahead of 2004 Olympic silver medalist Toby Stevenson, who failed to clear a height.
The Huskies will remain in the Pacific Northwest for the remainder of the regular season, traveling to Eugene for the Oregon Invitational next Saturday before closing the year with back-to-back meets at Husky Stadium, the UW-WSU Dual on Apr. 27, and the Fourth-Annual Ken Shannon Invitational on May 4.
