Rindal Comes Through Again In 6-5 Win
April 15, 2007
SEATTLE - Curt Rindal's run-scoring single in the ninth inning broke a 5-5 tie and lifted the Washington baseball team to a 6-5 win and a series sweep over UC Riverside Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
The Huskies (18-15) never led until the hit from Rindal, the Huskies' lone senior. In the ninth, Jake Rife reached on an infield single, barely reaching first ahead of a throw from shortstop. Matt Hague then reached on an error by second baseman Phil Boscarino to put runners at first and second with no outs. Rindal, who drove in five runs in Saturday's win over UCR, then followed with a bouncing single through the left side of the infield, plating Rife with the winning run.
Riverside reliever Joe Kelly (0-1), who entered the game not having allowed an earned run in 14.2 innings this season, suffered the loss, allowing the one run on three hits over one and two-thirds innings.
Husky relief ace Nick Hagadone (4-1) picked up the victory. Over his four and two-thirds innings, he allowed one run on six hits while striking out five.
The Highlanders (21-15) took the game's first lead in the second. After a leadoff single from Aaron Wible, first baseman Mark Samuelson belted his fifth home run of the season to right field, putting the visitors in front, 2-0.
Washington posted its first run in the third when second baseman Danny Cox singled, stole second and eventually scored on a Rife groundout, cutting the lead to 2-1.
UCR stretched the lead to three runs with two in the fifth. After walking one batter and hitting another, UW starter Nick Haughian was relieved by Hagadone. Joey Gonzales greeted the new pitcher with an RBI single through the left side and another run came in on a Jaime Pedroza sacrifice fly.
The Huskies drew back within one in the fifth as Michael Burgher was hit by a pitch and Hague poked a home run to right, his fourth, to make it a 4-3 UCR lead.
Riverside added a fifth run in the sixth when Mike Vass doubled and scored on a single from Kyle Barratt. In the bottom of the sixth, however, the Huskies loaded the bases on a single, an error and a hit batter before sacrifice flies from Brett Kaluza and Danny Cox drove in a run each to tie the game at 5-5.
The Huskies return to the road for a non-conference game at Portland Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Live audio and live stats for that game will be available on gohuskies.com. Next Friday through Sunday, USC visits Husky Ballpark for a three-game series. All three of those games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
