Softball Sweeps Weekend Pair from Ducks
April 15, 2007
EUGENE, Ore. - The Bruins collected nine hits including home runs from Jodie Legaspi and Lisa Dodd as UCLA defeated Oregon, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon in Eugene, Ore. UCLA improves to 28-11 (4-4 Pac-10) with the win, while the Ducks fall to 37-8 (3-5 Pac-10) with the loss.
A Lisa Dodd home run with two outs in the top of the first inning opened the scoring on the day, giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead after an inning of play. In the third, UCLA added another pair of runs on a Tara Henry single followed by a Krista Colburn home run, her fifth of the season, to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead.
Oregon would plate an unearned run on a squeeze play in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jennifer Salling led off the inning with a single, went to second on an Ann Marie Topps sacrifice. After a dropped pop fly gave the Ducks runners at the corners, Joanna Gail dropped down a suicide squeeze to score Salling and put the Ducks on the board.
UCLA answered in the top of the fifth inning. Henry led off with an infield single and took two bases on a Colburn single down the right field line. After Colburn stole second, Henry scored on a Creps single, leaving runners at the corners for Dodd, who grounded out but forced Colburn home for the 5-1 Bruin lead.
That was more than enough offense for Megan Langenfeld, who did not give up an earned run on the day, striking out a career-high eight batters and walking one on three hits.
UCLA returns to action at 7 pm on Friday night at Stanford before playing a pair of 1 pm games at Cal on Saturday and Sunday.
