Tenth-Place Finish for Cal Men's Golf in Arizona
April 15, 2007
TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman Chris Jensen, playing in his first spring tournament for the California men's golf team, led the Golden Bears with an even-par 216 as Cal placed 10th in the 16-team field at the 35th annual Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Arizona State University at Karsten Golf Course. Jensen shot a one-over 73 in Sunday's final round to follow up a 72 and a 71 in the opening two rounds as he finished in a tie for 23rd overall.
Oregon won the tournament, firing an 844 (-20). Arizona State came in second at 847 and USC gave the Pac-10 a sweep of the top three slots by shooting an 849. Texas A&M (850) and Arizona (852) rounded out the top five.
'As much as I hate to say it, we're not ready for prime time yet,' Cal head coach Steve Desimone said. 'We've had one good final round in the last six weeks. Once again, we had a chance to do some good stuff and didn't get it done. Great teams and great players have to play in final rounds.
'It was a good solid tournament for Chris [Jensen]. He hadn't been in the lineup, but he's been playing well the last couple of weeks. He's been working very hard and sometimes this game turns around quickly.'
Junior Michael Jensen, the older brother of Chris, and sophomore George Gandranata each finished with 219's (tied for 44th). Jensen was leading the Bears after two rounds at 141, but slid to a 78 in Sunday's final round. Gandranata shot a 75 on Sunday after opening the tourney with back-to-back par rounds.
The Golden Bears are next in action from Apr. 23-25 at the Pac-10 Championships in Eugene, Ore. Cal played on the same course in their last tournament, finishing in 10th place in cold, rainy conditions.
'This is the strongest the conference has been in a while,' Desimone said. 'We have our work cut out for us. But it's great golf course; hopefully we'll have a little better luck with the weather than last time. It will be a great challenge and a great opportunity for us. We need a good solid performance to get in to the NCAA Regionals.'
