Stanford's Theresa Logar Named Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week
April 16, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD senior Theresa Logar has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for Apr. 9-15, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Logar was absolutely pivotal for the Cardinal, who secured at least a share of the Pac-10 title with 4-3 wins over both No. 13 UCLA and No. 7 USC. The 16th-ranked senior was 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles, meaning any loss of Logar's would have meant at least one team loss for the top-ranked Cardinal.
On Friday against the Bruins, Stanford narrowly avoided the upset, pulling out the doubles point and then splitting the three singles matches at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the doubles point tied at 1-1, Logar and teammate Whitney Deason dug down and won in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, 7-3, to give Stanford the eventual difference-maker. Logar then took out UCLA's Riza Zalameda, ranked 22nd, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
Saturday saw a battle of the Conference unbeatens, as Stanford and USC each entered the dual with 6-0 records. Once again, Logar and Deason clinched the crucial doubles point, upsetting the 43rd-ranked duo of Sarah Fansler and Dianne Matias, 9-7, at the third doubles spot. Logar then finished off her week with an impressive 6-4, 6-4 win over 12th-ranked Lindsey Nelson, and her teammates did the rest.
The weekend was especially satisfying considering Logar had lost to both Zalameda and Nelson in the earlier meetings between the schools. Logar is now 12-3 against ranked opponents this season, 23-7 overall.
No. 1 Stanford (19-1, 7-0 Pac-10) can wrap up the Pac-10 Championship next week when it faces California on Saturday, Apr. 21 at Berkeley.
This is the second career Player of the Week award for Logar and the fifth all-time for Stanford.
