April 16, 2007
TEMPE, Ariz. - Three members of the Arizona State University track and field program have been earned Pac-10 Athlete of the Week honors for the week of April 9-15, the Conference announced Monday. Sarah Stevens (field) and Latosha Wallace (track) swept the women's awards while Domenik Peterson earned the men's track honor.
Peterson garnered the third Pac-10 weekly honor of his career after being selected for the award in 2004 and 2005. This time, Peterson was selected after turning in two of the top times in the nation so far this season as he clocked in at 20.70 in the 200m dash and 45.99 in the 400m dash at the Sun Angel Track Classic in Tempe. His 200m time is currently the fifth-fastest in the NCAA while quarter time is ranked fourth. Peterson also ran the second leg of the 4x100m relay, helping the quartet to a time of 39.62, the sixth-fastest in the NCAA this year.
Staying on the track, Wallace earned her first career honor from the Pac-10 after clocking a time of 56.75 in the 400m hurdles to move into third on the all-time Arizona State list while also climbing to No. 2 on both the college and world lists. Wallace also had a hand in helping the 4x400m relay team run its fastest time of the season by anchoring the squad to a time of 3:34.42.
Stevens also earned her first honor as the NCAA Indoor Shot Put Champion won two events and finished second in another at the Sun Angel meet. Stevens broke her own outdoor school record in the shot put with a toss of 18.03m (59-02.00) to take the national lead and move into ninth on the latest world list to win the event after taking the discus title with a winning mark of 55.32m (181-06). Stevens also finished second in the hammer throw with her toss of 62.28m (204-04).
The Sun Devils will take to the road this weekend as they are set to compete in the UC San Diego Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif., on Saturday, April 21.
