Tasha Schwikert Named West Region Gymnast Of The Year
April 16, 2007
UCLA junior Tasha Schwikert (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial HS) has been named the West Region Gymnast of the Year. Schwikert, who was also selected the Pac-10 Gymnast of the Year, has been one of the nation's top competitors in 2007, finishing the regular season as the only gymnast in the nation to rank in the Top 15 in the all-around and on all four events. She won the all-around, vault, beam and floor titles at the Pac-10 Championships and the all-around, beam and floor crowns at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.
Schwikert, the 2005 NCAA all-around champion, is one of the favorites to win the all-around crown next week at the NCAA Championships. She has posted two of the Top 3 all-around scores in the nation this year, earning a 39.750 at the Pac-10 Championships and a 39.700 in a dual meet against Arizona on Jan. 21. Schwikert averages 39.456 in the all-around and has won the all-around in six consecutive meets. In all, she has captured an impressive 35 individual victories on the year. Schwikert averages over 9.9 on vault and floor and over 9.84 on bars and beam and has hit 48 of 49 routines on the season and 47 in a row. Thirty-three of her 49 routines (67%) have scored 9.9 or better.
Schwikert was also honored earlier in the month on the All-Pac-10 team in the all-around and on the Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention squad.
