Cal Baseball Wins, 10-4, at Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - Paced by home runs from sophomore first baseman David Cooper and freshman right fielder/pitcher Blake Smith, and solid starting pitching from sophomore right hander Travis Erickson, the California baseball team topped Sacramento State, 10-4, Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field. The Golden Bears evened their record to 19-19 overall. The Hornets fell to 10-27.
Erickson (1-1) earned his first collegiate victory, throwing 3.0 innings with two hits, no runs, no walks and four strikeouts. Cal scored its first run of the game in the third inning when freshman center fielder Brett Jackson had a fielder's choice RBI, scoring sophomore shortstop Michael Brady, who had led-off the inning being hit by a pitch from Sacramento State starter Billy Sinacori (1-1). Sinacori suffered the loss despite throwing 3.0 innings with no hits, one unearned run, one walk and two strikeouts.
The Bears did their big offensive damage in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. In the fourth, Cooper led off the inning with a solo home run to right center field, and senior third baseman Brett Munster and sophomore catcher Charlie Cutler forced in runs by walking and getting hit by a pitch, respectively, with the bases loaded.
Cal added two more runs in the fifth when Cooper led-off the inning with a double to left-center, and scored on Smith's two-run homer to right-center field. The Bears padded their lead to 8-0 with two runs in the sixth when Cooper had a sacrifice fly to left field, and Smith had an RBI single to left.
The Hornets finally got two runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth off of Smith, who came in to pitch in the fourth inning (2.0 innings, three hits, two runs, one walk, four strikeouts) and ended up yielding a wild pitch and an RBI single to pinch hitter Wes Oberlin. Sac State added a run in the eighth on an RBI triple by pinch hitter Montana Dye, Cal countered with two runs in the top of the ninth on freshman pinch hitter Jeff Kobernus' sacrifice fly to right, and freshman second baseman Rich Gorman's RBI single. The Hornets got the game's final run in the bottom of the ninth on Nick Nunez's wild pitch for the final 10-4 margin.
Smith finished the day 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Cooper was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBI. Munster (2-for-4, RBI) and Gorman (2-for-2, double, RBI) also had two hits apiece for the Bears.
The Bears next host Bay Area rival Stanford in a three-game Pac-10 series, beginning Friday, Apr. 20 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Saturday, Apr. 21 and Sunday, Apr. 22 contests begin at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
