No. 18 UC Irvine Edges USC, 4-3
April 17, 2007
IRVINE, Calif. -- A three-run third inning gave the lead for good Tuesday as the No. 18 UC Irvine Anteaters defeated the USC Trojans, 4-3, in a nonconference game. The Anteaters improved to 26-10-1 on the season and held off a late Trojans' rally in the ninth as Blair Erickson recorded his 11th save with the tying run at second.
The Trojans dropped to 19-19 overall, suffering their sixth straight loss. Starter Tommy Milone (2-4) took the loss despite one of his best efforts of the season with seven innings of work where he allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
UCI took advantage of a Grant Green error in the second as two unearned runs scored for a 3-0 Anteaters lead. A run in the fourth and fifth innings for the Trojans cut the lead to 3-2, thanks to an RBI single from freshman Keith Castillo and an RBI groundout by junior Matt Cusick.
Ollie Linton tripled to lead off the UCI eighth off reliever Hector Rabago and later scored on Ben Orloff's sacrifice fly to right. With an out in the ninth, freshman pinch hitter Mike O'Neill doubled home Hector Estrella, but Erickson came in and struck out Nick Buss and got Green to line out back to the mound to secure the win.
USC travels to Washington for a Pac-10 Conference series this weekend (April 20-22). Friday's game will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. start on Sunday. All three games will be available via video webcast at gohuskies.cstv.com.
