April 17, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA sophomore Cody Decker has earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors for the week of April 9-15, the conference announced Tuesday. Decker recorded a .444 batting average (8-for-18) in four games last week with three home runs, three runs and 11 RBI.
Decker belted a home run in each of UCLA's three victories at USC over the weekend and had the game-winning RBI in Sunday's ninth-inning 7-6 comeback victory. In the Bruins' first three-game sweep of crosstown rival USC since 1987, Decker hit at a .538 clip (7-for-13).
In Sunday's 12-9 win, the Santa Monica, Calif., native drilled a two-out grand slam to center, handing the Bruins an 11-6 cushion in the eighth inning. UCLA trailed 4-0 after three innings and rallied with five eighth-inning runs, four coming off Decker's blast - his team-leading ninth home run of the season and second grand slam of the year.
Playing before a national television audience Saturday afternoon, Decker finished 3-for-4 with one solo home run, two RBI and one run. UCLA trailed 6-4 entering the ninth inning, tied the game on a two-out two-RBI single by Brandon Crawford and took a 7-6 lead on Decker's infield single. Crawford scored from second base on the play, and Decker slid head-first into first base to beat the throw from Trojan first baseman Derek Perren.
Friday evening, Decker's two-run home run with two outs in the top of the first inning handed UCLA a 2-0 lead, one they would not relinquish. The Pac-10 Player of the Week award is the first of Decker's career. Crawford earned the weekly honor on Feb. 20, and right-hander Tyson Brummett has twice been named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 27, April 3).
No. 24 UCLA looks for its fourth-consecutive victory when the Bruins host No. 11 Pepperdine at Jackie Robinson Stadium Tuesday evening. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
