Dawgs Drop Rain-Shortened Game To Pilots, 5-4

April 18, 2007

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take its first lead and, shortly thereafter, a downpour brought about an hour and 20-minute rain delay and eventually led to the game being halted as the Pilots beat Washington, 5-4, in a rain-shortened, six-inning game at Joe Etzel Field.

After a two-run double from Danny Meier had given Portland the lead for the first time, rain and hail began to fall heavily, leading the long delay. As soon as the teams took the field to get re-started, another downpour began and the final out of the sixth was recorded before the game was called. The win improved the Pilots to 15-20 on the season while the Huskies fell to 19-16.

Washington led from the very beginning of the game as junior center fielder Michael Burgher hit the first pitch out the game over the left-field fence, his first home run of the season, to give the UW an early 1-0 advantage.

In the third, the Huskies used three walks to load the bases. Ty Rasmussen then drove in Burgher with a groundout to make it a 2-0 Husky lead. Burgher scored again in the third. After reaching on a single up the middle, he took two bases on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jake Rife.

In the fifth, the Pilots tied the game on one swing. With two on and two out, left fielder Justin Pierce hit a three-run homer to left, tying the score at 3-3.

The Huskies took the lead back in the top of the sixth as Burgher looped a two-out, RBI single to drive in Joey Dunn.

Portland replied quickly, however, in the bottom of the sixth. With Brandon McKerney on in relief of starter Jason Erickson, the Pilots had runners at second and third with one out when Meier doubled to left, scoring both runner to put the home team in front, 5-4.

McKerney (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing the two runs in his two-thirds innings of work. Pilots reliever Brian Yoakum, the fifth of five Portland pitchers to pitch in the game, improved to 2-0, allowing a run in his one inning.

The Huskies return to Pac-10 play this weekend at Husky Ballpark as USC visits for a three-game series. All three, beginning with Friday night's 6:30 p.m. game, will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
