LOS ANGELES -- USC basketball recruit O.J. Mayo was named National High School Boys Basketball Player of the Year on April 17 by EA Sports. The senior was a first-team selection by EA Sports for an unprecedented third time.
Mayo, a 6-5 guard from Huntington H.S. in Huntington, W.Va. was honored with the top award for boys basketball after winning all-state honors in three states and helping two different teams win a total of three state titles.
In his senior season, Mayo helped lead Huntington H.S. to a 25-2 record, a third-straight state title and the highest ever national ranking (No. 3) for a Mountain State team. He averaged 28.2 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds en route to being named West Virginia Player of the Year.
Earlier this month Mayo was named the East Team MVP of the Roundball Classic held in Chicago when he scored a game-high 27 points on 11-for-18 shooting. Mayo hit five of his 10 three-point attempts and dished out six assists.
