TEMPE, Ariz. - By Ashley White
Eric Sogard went 3 for 4 with a home run, and Arizona State triumphed over the University of Louisiana-Lafayette by a score of 8-2 on Friday night in front of a crowd of 3,587 in Tempe. The win puts the Sun Devils' record at 30-10, the 45th straight season ASU has totaled at least 30 wins.
Sogard, the Sun Devil second-baseman, hammered his eighth home run of the season over the right field fence in the first inning. He followed in the third with a single, and doubled and scored in the seventh.
The Ragin' Cajuns tied the score at 1-1 in the third inning when catcher Jonathan Lucroy doubled to score second baseman Devon Bourque who had reached on a walk.
The tie was short-lived, however, as the Sun Devils went ahead for good in the next inning, thanks in part to three consecutive singles by Petey Paramore, Matt Spencer and Andrew Romine. Louisiana-Lafayette's starting pitcher, Buddy Glass, then walked Sun Devil outfielder Tim Smith to score Paramore. First baseman Brett Wallace drove in Spencer and Romine on a single, giving him three RBI on the night.
Arizona State's starting pitcher, Mike Leake, went seven strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits on his way to his ninth victory of the season. Scott Mueller then finished off the Ragin' Cajuns, only giving up a single over two innings.
The Sun Devils continue their three-game set with the Ragin' Cajuns Saturday night, with first pitch scheduled at 6:00 p.m at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
