LINCOLN, NEB. - University of California sophomore right-hander Matt Gorgen has been selected one of 40 athletes on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List. Gorgen, from Clayton, Calif., has been stellar this season, striking out 57 batters (seventh in the Pac-10) in 42.2 innings with a 1.69 ERA (second in the Pac-10).
Gorgen also leads the Pac-10 with 22 appearances, is fourth with six saves, and of his 57 strikeouts, 26 have been called looking (second in the Pac-10). In the Bears' 6-1 win over Oral Roberts on Mar. 24, he threw a career-high 4.0 innings, yielding just one hit with no walks and a career-high eight strikeouts. In 51 career appearances, he now has 91 strikeouts in 82.1 innings.
Gorgen and the Bears (19-19, 3-6) have a big series this weekend as Cal hosts Bay Area rival Stanford (15-18, 1-8) in a three-game Pac-10 series at Evans Diamond. The games are at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Apr. 20, and 1 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 21, and Sunday, Apr. 22.
