Cal Baseball Shuts Out Stanford, 3-0
April 20, 2007
BERKELEY, CALIF. - Behind a masterful pitching performance from sophomore right-hander Tyson Ross and timely hitting from Michael Brady, Charlie Cutler and Josh Satin, the California baseball team shut out Bay Area rival Stanford, 3-0, in a Pac-10 contest Friday at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 20-19 overall and 4-6 in the Pac-10. The Cardinal dropped to 15-19 and 1-9 in conference play.
It was Cal pitching's second shut out in the last four games as the Bears shut out defending national champion Oregon State, 4-0, Apr. 14 in Corvallis.
Cal got all the runs it needed in the fifth and sixth innings off of Stanford sophomore left-hander Jeremy Bliech (1-7, 7.2 innings, six hits, three runs, one walk, four strikeouts). The Bears pushed two runs across in the fifth inning when sophomore shortstop Brady's sacrifice fly scored freshman right fielder Blake Smith, followed by sophomore catcher Cutler's RBI double that scored senior third baseman Brett Munster. Munster had reached base on a one-single and advanced to second on a Bliech wild pitch.
Cal added an insurance run in the sixth when junior second baseman Satin hit a line drive home run over the left field fence. The three runs was more than enough for Ross (4-5), who won his fourth game of the year by pitching 7.2 innings with five hits, no runs, three walks and six strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Matt Gorgen replaced Ross in the eighth inning with runners on first and third and was able to get Brendan Domaracki to ground out to second base to end the inning. Gorgen then earned his seventh save of the year by striking out Brian Juhl to lead off the ninth and yielding a walk to Cord Phelps, before forcing Randy Molina to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
With Friday's performance, Ross now has 88 strikeouts in 86.1 innings and a 1.98 ERA. Gorgen not only picked up his seventh save, but he now has 58 strikeouts in 44.0 innings with a 1.64 ERA.
The Bears next host Bay Area rival Stanford in the second game of the three-game Pac-10 series, Saturday, Apr. 21 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
Cal: Josh Satin, solo home run in the sixth inning.
