USC Newcomer Sidelined By Knee Injury
April 20, 2007
The USC women's basketball team will have incoming freshman Stefanie Gilbreath redshirt her first season at Troy following the high school all-star's knee injury suffered during practice before the 2007 McDonald's High School All-American Game. Gilbreath was named a WBCA High School All-American and a PARADE Second Team All-American following her standout prep career at Cinco Ranch High School in Katy, Texas. Her torn ACL suffered in March will keep the incoming 6-1 guard out of action for her true freshman season at USC.
Gilbreath is the second consecutive USC star recruit to befall an unfortunate knee injury before arriving at Troy. USC's top 2006 recruit, Jacki Gemelos, also tore her ACL - an injury suffered at the close of her high school season. Gemelos will take the floor for the first time for the 2007-08 season along with USC's second incoming freshman - 6-5 center Kari LaPlante - while Gilbreath rehabs her knee.
'We'll support Stefanie 100 percent and are looking forward to her playing in the 2008-09 season,' USC head coach Mark Trakh said. 'She was the 11th ranked recruit in the nation and we know she's going to be an outstanding player here. It's really unfortunate to see her get hurt, but we anticipate a strong future for her here at USC'
