USC Snaps Six-Game Losing Streak With 8-5 Win At Washington
April 20, 2007
SEATTLE - Freshman Brad Boxberger allowed only one run over seven innings Friday as the USC Trojans snapped a season-long six-game losing streak with an 8-5 win on the road against the Washington Huskies at Husky Ballpark. Boxberger gave up just three hits with a walk and tied a season-high with nine strikeouts for the Trojans.
Freshman Grant Green went 2-for-4 with three RBI while senior Hector Estrella and sophomore Anthony Vasquez collected three hits each for USC (20-19, 3-7). Senior closer Paul Koss was able to secure the win after Washington (19-17, 5-5) rallied for four runs in the bottom of ninth and had a chance with runners at second and third with the tying run at the plate.
USC clinged to a 2-1 lead after five before pushing across three runs in the sixth. Green delivered his eighth triple of the season with a two-run shot to right to score Vasquez and Estrella. Matt Cusick followed with an RBI single to the gap in left center.
With his triple, Green tied a USC single-season record, previously held by held by Ed Simpson(1953), Gerald Mason (1954) and Steve Kemp (1975).
The Huskies loaded the bases in the ninth before Brian Pearl grounded into a double play. UW would score three more unearned runs before Koss struck out Jake Rife for the final out.
The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. start and a 1 p.m. start on Sunday. Both games will be broadcast only on gohuskies.cstv.com.
