April 21, 2007
SEATTLE - USC used a four-run sixth inning to break open a tight game and handed the Washington baseball team a 5-2 loss Saturday at Husky Ballpark.
The Trojans (21-19 overall, 4-7 in the Pac-10) have won the first two games of the three-game conference series, dropping the Huskies' record to 19-18 overall and 5-6 in Pac-10 play.
USC starting pitcher Ryan Cook (5-2) picked up the victory, going eight innings and allowing two runs on eight hits. He walked four and struck out one. Husky starter Nick Haughian (3-5) gave up three runs on seven hits over five-plus innings in the loss.
Husky right fielder Matt Hague led the UW offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two batted in
USC opened the scoring with one in the second. Right fielder Roberto Lopez reached on a one-out single, moved to second on a pitch in the dirt and then scored on a single from catcher Johnny Bowden for a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth. After a walk and a single to open the inning, reliever Brandon McKerney replaced Haughian. Hector Estrella's single greeted the reliever, driving in one run. Then, with runners at second and third after a wild pitch, Hector Rebago reached on an error by shortstop Brian Pearl, allowing two runs to cross the plate. An RBI single from Spencer Pabst closed out the four-run inning with the Trojans in front, 5-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies broke through. After a leadoff walk to Ty Rasmussen, Hague belted a long home run to left field, his fifth of the season, to cut the lead to 5-2.
USC closer Paul Koss came on in the ninth and gave up two singles to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs, but he struck out Jake Rife on a 3-2 pitch to lock down his conference-leading 14th save.
The Huskies and Trojans play Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on KKNW AM-1150 and also over the internet at gohuskies.com.
