Cardinal Drops 5-1 Decision to Bears

The Cardinal concluded the regular season today with a 5-1 loss to California in a Pac-10 match at the Taube Tennis Center. The match began with singles play, but after the Bear's won five of six to clinch the win, the doubles competition was cancelled. Stanford will next play at the Pac-10 Individual Championships, April 26-29 in Ojai.
Stanford finished 2007 with an 8-16 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the Pac-10. The Bears are 14-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
The Cardinal led 1-0 after Richard Wire, playing No. 2 singles, beat Tyler Brown in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Wire entered the match ranked No. 73 in the country.
But Cal quickly won at No. 6 and No. 5 to take a 2-1 lead, then won tough matches at No. 3 and No. 1 to clinch the match. Kallim Stewart beat David Ryan, a senior playing in his final home match, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6. Moments later, Ken Nakahara posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over freshman Kevin Kaiser.
Stanford's Blake Muller lost a hard fought 7-5 first set, then lost 6-3 in the second set as Cal's Eoin Heavey put the Bears on top 3-1. The match was clinched at No. 1 when Pierre Mouillon, the No. 32 ranked singles player in the country, beat Matt Bruch, 6-4, 7-5.
