Frederick Leads Three to Qualifying Marks in Eugene

April 20, 2007

EUGENE, Ore. - Norris Frederick won the high jump and two UW distance runners earned NCAA Regional qualifying marks Friday as Washington kicked off its final road trip of the 2007 regular season at the Oregon Invitational in Eugene. The two-day meet, featuring some of the nation's top collegians, continues Saturday.

While competition in the distance events highlighted the evening's schedule, four-time All-American Frederick stole the show for Washington, equaling his outdoor lifetime-best in the high jump with a clearance of 7 feet, 1 inch. Frederick's clearance - equal to the second-best in UW history - has been bettered by just eight collegians this year and bested all comers Friday in an outstanding field.

'Norris thrives on energy and crowd enthusiasm, and with the lights on and the crowd really getting into the meet, this was the perfect recipe for success for him,' said fifth-year head coach Greg Metcalf.

Washington's distance runners also benefited from the large, encouraging crowd on hand at Oregon's Hayward Field, with both senior Mike Sayenko and junior Brad Liber earning NCAA Regional qualifying marks.

Already qualified for next year's U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon, Sayenko put the 2007 NCAA Championships in his sights with a time of 14 minutes, 8.71 seconds in the 5,000 meters Friday, a full six seconds faster than his previous lifetime best. Liber, meanwhile, knocked two seconds off of his season-best mark in the steeplechase with a time of 9:05.31, bringing UW's total number of NCAA Regional-qualified athletes to 32 - two more than the team's total from the entire 2006 season.

Washington will be back in action Saturday at Oregon before returning home to prepare for Friday's regular-season climax, the 94th Washington-Washington State Dual, held for the first time ever under the lights at Husky Stadium on Friday evening.
