STANFORD - In a match it had to win to keep its hopes of an NCAA regional bid alive, California defeated Stanford, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Golden Bears second victory over the Cardinal this season gives them a final regular-season record of 14-9, 4-3.

After Stanford (8-16, 2-5) took an early 1-0 lead, Cal came back to win the next five matches. The match-clinching victory occurred on the top court, where junior Pierre Mouillon defeated Matt Bruch, 6-4, 7-5.

'It was a gritty, tough match,' Cal head coach Peter Wright said. 'Pierre had a fantastic day, beating Matt Bruch. It was an amazing, gutsy performance from our guys today. We came into this match looking at it as a must win. We were playing for a spot in the NCAA regionals and hopefully we earned it.'

Freshman Kallim Stewart got Cal on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over David Ryan on the sixth court. Junior Ken Nakahara followed Stewart with an equally impressive victory on the fifth court. Nakahara beat Kevin Kaiser, 6-0, 6-2.

On the No. 3 court, sophomore Eoin Heavey won a close first set over Blake Muller, 7-5. Heavey won the second set decisively, 6-3.

After senior Daniel Sebescen won the first set in his match against Eric McKean, 6-4, he lost the second, 2-6. In the third-set tiebreaker, Sebescen came away with the win in the final match of the day.

Next up for the Bears is the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai from April 26-29. Cal will find out if it received a bid into the NCAA regionals on Tuesday, May 1, at 11:30 a.m.
