Ison Throws Gem As Cougars Defeat No. 12 Arizona, 4-3
April 21, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - Nick Ison allowed just two hits over seven and 1/3 innings and Mike Gilbert drove in three runs as Washington State defeated No. 12 Arizona, 4-3, in a Pacific-10 Conference game Saturday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
Ison held the Wildcat bats in check for much of the game as he allowed two runs on the afternoon, retiring 14 straight at one point midway through the game. Ison followed teammate Wayne Daman Jr. who held Arizona to four hits in the series opener Friday, though the Wildcats (31-8, 9-2) held on for the 3-1 lead. Saturday, however, the Cougars (18-18, 2-9) found enough offense to get Ison the win.
In the ninth with WSU leading 4-2, reliever Ross Humes allowed a one-out home run to Colt Sedbrook before striking out C.J. Ziegler and Bill Rhinehart to end the game. It was Humes' seventh save of the season, in seven attempts, and moved him into a tie for fourth with former Cougar Oscar Jones (1929) on WSU's single-season list.
The Cougars improved to 4-2 this season in one-run games while Arizona dropped its first one-run contest, falling to 9-1 in such games this season.
WSU took the lead in the fourth as it batted around. Paul Gran and Jared Prince had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. One out later and with the bases loaded, \Gilbert's single through the left side brought home two runs. Zach Borba's two-out single to right brought home Jeff Miller with the third run of the inning as WSU took a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth.
WSU increased the lead to 4-1 in the sixth as Gilbert drilled a solo home run deep over the left field wall. It was Gilbert's first home run as a Cougar and the first allowed by Wildcat pitcher Brad Mills in 68 innings this season.
Leading off the third Wildcat right fielder Jon Gaston doubled to the gap in right center, the first hit of the game for either team. One out later, Gaston came home on Robert Abel's sacrifice fly to right for the game's first run.
Arizona cut the lead in half in the eighth in the same fashion as its first run. Rhinehart led off with a double then scored one out later of a sacrifice fly down the right field line. The Wildcats chased Ison during the inning after putting runners at second and third with one out. Humes came on and got the sacrifice fly then induced pinch hitter Travis Peep in an inning-ending groundout to third as the Cougars held on to a 4-2 lead.
Ison finished his night with three strikeouts and one walk as he improved to 4-5 this season. Gilbert went 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Borba added two hits for WSU.
Mills pitched well in his seven-plus innings of work, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out seven as his record falls to 8-3.
These same two teams conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
