TEMPE, Ariz. - By Ashley White
Arizona State baseball survived a late rally by the University of Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday night, coming up with an 11-8 victory in front of 2,701 in Tempe. The win ups ASU to 31-10 on the year.
Starting pitcher Josh Satow got his ninth win of the season while reaching a career-high in strikeouts, fanning 11 Ragin' Cajuns over seven solid innings of work. The left-hander only allowed one run and three hits on the night.
Satow's previous career high in strikeouts was last season when he struck out 10 UCLA Bruins on April 21, 2006, exactly one year ago.
ASU seemingly put the game away in the sixth, scoring five times to make it 11-1. Petey Paramore knocked home Kile Roling with an RBI double, then RBI singles by CJ Retherford and Tim Smith brought home two more. Brett Wallace then doubled, scoring Retherford and Mike Jones to put the Sun Devils up by ten.
Despite compiling 11 runs on 14 hits during the first six innings, the Sun Devils had to battle to keep the lead toward the end of the contest. After Satow was lifted after seven, Louisiana-Lafayette started a rally in the eighth, plating four runs against Sun Devil reliever Jason Mitchell. The Ragin' Cajuns then got to Adam Bailey and Ted Aust in the following inning, but righty Jason Jarvis was able to shut the door after being brought on with the tying run at the plate and only one out. The save was the fifth of the season for Jarvis.
Sun Devil first baseman Brett Wallace continued to beat up on the opposition with his torrid hitting, going a perfect 4-4 with a double, a triple and five RBI. Wallace has now driven in 59 runs on the season. Right fielder Ike Davis also had a strong night for Arizona State with two hits and two RBI. CJ Retherford and Kiel Roling each had two hits of their own.
Arizona State finishes up the weekend series against Louisiana-Lafayette tomorrow afternoon in Tempe, with first pitch scheduled at 1:00 p.m.
