No. 13 California Defeats the No. 17 Cardinal at The Big Row
April 21, 2007
BERKELEY, CALIF. - The California Golden Bears won four of their five races in dual competition against Stanford, Saturday morning at Redwood Shores, Calif. The Cal varsity eight won their fifth consecutive dual matchup against Stanford.
The Cal varsity eight was under-stroking Stanford after the initial starting strokes and powered out to a six-seat lead at the half-way point. Cal doubled the margin in the second half and was in control throughout. The Bears finished 4.5 seconds ahead of the Cardinal. Cal used a different line-up from the one which defeated Tennessee less than a week ago. Junior Ali Seders moved into the stroke seat of the varsity eight and set a rhythm that worked very well
'It has taken a little while, but we're finding our rhythm within the crews and as a team,' said Cal head coach Dave O'Neill. 'I give the team a lot of credit for working so hard in order to figure things out. This spring has been a process, and we're making some real progress at the right time. We have found that a number of women are capable of racing and succeeding in the varsity eight, and this bodes well for the second varsity eight and the entire team.'
The Cal second varsity eight moved out to a six-seat lead over the Cardinal in the initial 500 meters and steadily increased its lead down the course, eventually winning the race by nearly eight seconds. The Bears' varsity four had a strong race, defeating the Cardinal by more than four seconds.
The Cal third varsity eight was racing Stanford top lightweight eight. The Bears were two-seats ahead at the 1000 meter mark and surged ahead during the third 500 meter portion of the race. Cal finished one length, 3.4 seconds, ahead of the Cardinal.
'This was a very important day for us,' O'Neill said. 'We stumbled pretty badly last Saturday (losses in varsity eight to Notre Dame and Louisville), but we are moving in the right direction. The Stanford crew is very good, so this is a solid win for the varsity eight and the whole team.'
Cal will next face Washington Saturday, April 28, 2007, on Montlake Cut in Settle Wash.
