NO. 24 UCLA Baseball Tops Cal State Northridge, 8-3, in Game One

Los Angeles - The No. 24 UCLA baseball team defeated Cal State Northridge, 8-3, before a capacity crowd Saturday in the first game of an afternoon doubleheader at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Senior right-hander Tyson Brummett pitched his fifth complete game of the season, striking out eight hitters while issuing just one walk.
The Bruins (20-16) used three home runs to earn the non-conference victory over the Matadors (13-26). First baseman Cody Decker hit his team-leading 10th round-tripper, and center fielder Brady Dolan and designated hitter Casey Haerther each belted their first home runs as Bruins. Decker posted a 2-for-4 effort with two RBI and one run. Haerther finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run. Dolan hit 2-for-4 with one home run, one double, one RBI and one run.
Matador first baseman Jorge Andrade, Jr., finished the afternoon hitting 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Cal State Northridge took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-double by Andrade, Jr. The Bruins claimed a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the first when Decker belted a two-run blast over the left field fence. Decker's home run was his team-leading 10th round-tripper of the season.
In the bottom of the second, center fielder Brady Dolan smacked a solo home run to center field, giving UCLA a 3-1 cushion.
Cal State Northridge cut the Bruins' lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning when Andrade, Jr. scored from third base on a pickoff play at first base to end the inning. UCLA responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs, coming off a two-run blast by Haerther to straight-away center.
UCLA padded its lead with three runs in the seventh inning. With runners at first and third, shortstop Brandon Crawford lined a double to the gap in left-center, scoring catcher Ryan Babineau and third baseman Jermaine Curtis. Crawford scored from third on a sacrifice fly to right field by right fielder Gabe Cohen.
The Bruins continue their doubleheader this afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Left-hander Tim Murphy will take the hill for UCLA, while Cal State Northridge right-hander Joe Rocchio starts for the visiting Matadors.
Game Notes: Cody Decker has hit nine home runs through the Bruins last 14 games; the Santa Monica, Calif., resident, has blasted four home runs in each of UCLA's last five contests...the Bruins have won 12 of their last 14 games, and have tallied wins in six of their last eight home games...Brummett has struck out a team-leading 77 hitters in 89.0 innings pitched and boasts a 2.83 ERA this season.
