April 21, 2007

Eugene, Ore. -. Alex Slovic moved up to second on the Husky career combines wins list and Washington beat Oregon 6-1 in the Pac-10 Conference finale for both teams on Saturday in Eugene, Ore. The 31st-ranked Huskies (16-6 overall, 4-3 Pac-10) won all three doubles matches and the first six singles matches to beat the Ducks (10-13, 1-6) and assure at least a third-place finish in the conference standings.

The Huskies set the tone early in doubles, led by Andy Kuharszky and Derek Drabble at No. 3. The Husky duo beat Ric Mortera and Mike Myrhead 8-1 to finish first. They were closely followed by Michael Ricks and Patrik Fischer at No. 2, who clinched the point and won their team-best 20th doubles match of the season. Slovic and Daniel Chu followed with an 8-4 decision at No.1 to increase their UW record doubles wins total to 83.

Slovic followed his doubles win with a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Marcos Verdasco at No. 1. Slovic, the 74th ranked singles player in the nation, picked up his 93rd career singles win in the process and moved past fellow Yugoslavian Alex Vlaski into second all-time on the UW's combined wins list with 176.

Fischer extended the Huskies' lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 decision at No. 4. The win improved Fischer's record to 17-9 on the season. Andy Kuharszky clinched the match for the Huskies with a straight-set win over Geoff Embry at No. 3. Kuharszky improved to a team-best 23-7 on the season, 16-6 in dual matches.

Daniel Chu snapped a two-match losing streak with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 and Derek Drabble gave the Huskies their sixth point with a three-set win at No. 5. Chu moved to 17-9 on the season, while Drabble went to 13-10.

The Ducks rallied in the No. 6 singles match to earn their lone point of the day. Husky senior Mike Ricks won the first set 6-2, but lost 6-2 in the second and fell 8-6 in a third-set tie breaker.

'I feel pretty good about us right now,' said Head Coach Matt Anger. 'We're definitely playing better as we head to Pac-10's.'

The Huskies will head back to Seattle before going to Ojai, Calif. for the Pac-10 Conference Championships from April 26-29.
