Bruins Hold on to Defeat Cal, 5-3
April 22, 2007
Berkeley - The 12th-ranked UCLA Bruins had just enough offensive firepower to escape Levine-Fricke field with a 5-3 win over the California Golden Bears on Sunday afternoon. Cal left 13 runners on base, including a total of six in the sixth and seventh innings.
Cal (26-26, 2-10 Pac-10) plays a double-header at UC Davis on Apr. 25 beginning at 1:00 p.m.
UCLA (30-12, 6-5 Pac-10) responded in the fifth inning as Julie Burney connected for a solo home run off of Lauren Frankiewicz to knot the score at 1-1. Tara Henry crossed home plate to give UCLA a 2-1 lead courtesy of a Jaisa Creps sacrifice fly to left field.
Cal answered right back in the bottom half of the frame when Masaniai belted a line drive solo home run off of Whitney Baker to even the contest at 2-2. It was her eighth home run of the season.
Megan Langenfeld's solo home run in the top of the sixth would put the Bruins up 3-2, before Lisa Dodd's two-run home run in the top of the seventh boosted UCLA's lead to 5-2.
Cal had its chances in the sixth and seventh innings and even scored in the seventh when Baker walked in Shannon Houston with the bases loaded, trimming the deficit to 5-3. Alex Sutton then drove Baker's pitch deep into left field (with the bases still loaded and two outs), but the ball did not have quite the distance, as Krista Colburn snagged it on the warning track to end the game.
Frankiewicz took the loss for Cal to fall to 13-13 in the circle (five runs on eight hits in seven innings of work). Racklin finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Masaniai had two RBI in the losing effort.
