Coulter Ties School Record as Cougars Defeat No. 12 Arizona, 5-3
April 22, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - Travis Coulter tied a school record with three doubles and the Cougars scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth as Washington State defeated No. 12 Arizona 5-3 in a Pacific-10 Conference game Sunday afternoon at Bailey-Brayton Field.
With the win the Cougars improve to 19-18 for the season, 3-9 in Pac-10 play, and take the series from the Wildcats after posting a 4-3 victory Saturday. Arizona falls to 31-9 overall, 9-3 in conference action, and drops just its second series of the season, the other coming against then-No. 8 Cal State Fullerton.
It was a 3-3 game in the bottom of the eighth when Greg Lagreid led off with a walk against Wildcat reliever David Coulon. After being sacrificed to second, Lagreid scored on a throwing error by Arizona third baseman Erik Castro. Paul Gran hit a shot to Castro that was ruled a hit, but the throw got by C.J. Ziegler at first, allowing Lagreid to score and Gran to move all the way to third. Jeff Miller then hit a slow roller to short that was bobbled, allowing Gran to score and Miller to reach safely.
In the ninth Ross Humes retired Arizona in order to pick up his third win of the season and give WSU its first conference series win of 2007.
Coulter's three doubles tied a school record that was previously held by 15 players, the most recent being Jay Miller, who knocked out three doubles at Northern Colorado, Apr. 21, 2006.
Coulter led off the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line. After Jared Prince's sacrificed him to third, Coulter scored on Lagreid's sacrifice fly to left. In the third WSU extended its lead to 2-0 as Coulter double and scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Prince.
In the fifth Coulter made it 3-for-3 as with one out and Josh Ashenbrenner on first, he doubled off the wall in right, bringing home Ashenbrenner for the 3-0 lead. That gave Cougar starter Jayson Miller some breathing room as the junior left hander was keeping the Wildcat hitters off balance.
Arizona found the scoreboard in the sixth with a pair of runs. Pinch-hitter Hunter Pace led off with a bunt and moved to third on two wild pitches before scoring on a throwing error when Lagreid's throw to third hit Colt Sedbrook in the batters box and went into left field. One out later C.J. Ziegler homered to left-center, cutting the Cougar lead to 3-2.
Arizona had tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth when T. J. Steele's two-out single to left scored Ziegler from second. Ziegler had earlier reached on a sharp single to second. WSU used four pitchers in the inning with Humes coming in with runners at the corners to strike out Jon Gaston and limit the damage to one run.
Miller went the first 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Humes retired all four batters he faced, registering two strikeouts. Coulter finished his afternoon going 3-for-3 with three doubles, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Simi Reynolds added a pair of hits while Prince, Lagreid and Miller had RBIs.
Arizona starter Ryan Perry went 4 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Coulon came on in the fifth and allowed just one hit in his three innings of work, but was tagged with the loss after walking the leadoff man in the eighth. Ziegler went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and his ninth home run of the season.
The Cougars return to the diamond Tuesday when they host Gonzaga at Bailey-Brayton Field. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. and marks the fourth and final meeting of the season between WSU and the Bulldogs, with the Cougars taking two of the first three games.
