The California Golden Bear women's golf team fired an opening round score of 312 to place sixth in the first day of competition in the Pac-10 Conference Championship at the Par 72, 6196-yard Broadmoor Golf Club on Monday afternoon.

Arizona State posted a 297 to grab first place, followed by USC (303), UCLA (305), Stanford (309) and Arizona (309).

'We posted a good first round score,' said head coach Nancy McDaniel. 'We're in a good spot and we are within good striking distance of some teams. We're just looking to build off this performance and improve.'

Sophomore Allison Goodman and freshman Sophia Janer paced Cal individually as they sit in fourth (tie) and sixth place (tie) respectively. Goodman shot a one-over 73 and had three birdies, while Janer fired a two-over 74 with four birdies.

Goodman started the day on the tenth hole with a par and then moved to one-under with a birdie on 11. After settling for a bogey on the 12th, Goodman responded with a birdie on the par-five 15th. Goodman would par the rest of the way to remain one-under thru nine holes. On the front nine, Goodman bogied holes 2-4, but managed a par on the fifth, before nailing a birdie put on the par-five sixth.

'(Allison) got off to a good start for us today,' said McDaniel. 'She kept plugging away and her play was real consistent on a rather difficult course.'

Janer, who also began on the tenth hole, made birdie on the 15th, before really leaving her mark on the back nine where she fired a two-under 33 -- including a trio of birdies on the first, second, and sixth holes. Janer made par on seven, eight, and nine to close out her round.

'Sofia has really been coming on this spring,' said McDaniel. 'We took her to Arizona State (Mar. 29-31) where she really started to show improvement. She's just ready to unleash (her game) and get the job done for us.'

Shannon Yocum (79), Roseanne Niven (86), and Christina Frick (89) rounded out the rest of the Cal individual scores on Monday.

Cal resumes second round action tomorrow with a tee time of approximately 9:00 a.m. Fans can follow all of the day's action on
