USC In 2nd After Pac-10 Championships Start

Junior Paola Moreno was one of only three golfers at par or better while junior Dewi Claire Schreefel joined her in the top 10 as the duo helped lead the No. 6 USC women's golf team to second place after the first day of the 2007 Pac-10 Championships on Monday (April 23) at the Broadmoor G.C. in Seattle, Wash.
The Trojans, after for their first team title since 1989, finished with a combined 303 (+15), six shots behind first-place Arizona State (297). UCLA is third (305) and is followed by Stanford (309), Arizona (309), California (312), Washington (313), Washington State (317), Oregon (324) and Oregon State (329).
Moreno, ranked No. 15 in the country by Golfweek.com, carded a par 72 that included three birdies and three bogeys. She is four strokes back of leader Anna Nordqvist of Arizona State (68) while Stanford's Mari Chun is in second (71).
Schreefel was even after the front nine and finished with a 3-over 75, good for a tie for ninth.
Senior Veronica Felibert and freshman Belen Mozo are tied for 17th after both posted first rounds of 78 (+6). Senior Catalina Marin rounded out USC's first-day efforts with an 83 (+11), tied for 36th.
Play continues Tuesday and Wednesday.
Within the USC-UCLA Lexus Gauntlet competition, the season-long battle between Trojans and Bruins in all sports, points for women's golf are awarded to the highest finisher between the crosstown rivals at the Pac-10 Championships. Five points are up for grabs for women's golf. The winning school needs 57.5 points to clinch.
