Tanner Gardner Wins Freestyle Title at University Nationals

Akron, Ohio - Junior Tanner Gardner continued his record-setting season this weekend, winning the University National Freestyle Championship in Akron, Ohio. Gardner went 4-0 on his way to the title, and qualified to compete at the US World Team Trials in June.
Gardner, who became the first Stanford wrestler to earn All-America honors in consecutive years, tied the Cardinal single-season win record this season on his way to a seventh place finish at the NCAA Championships. This weekend, he became the first Stanford wrestler to win a University National freestyle title, and the first wrestler to win at University Nationals ?since Dave Nowick won the Greco Roman title in 1992.
Gardner pinned Obe Blanc, who finished sixth at the NCAA Championships, in 50 seconds in the championship bout. Gardner will now compete at the ?US World Team Trials, June 7-9 in Las Vegas.?Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Zack Giesen and redshirt freshman Matt Kim ?both went 4-2 in the tournament and finished one match away from All-America status.??
