Washington's Dena Tyson Named Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week
April 24, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - WASHINGTON senior Dena Tyson has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for Apr. 17-23, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
The Husky first baseman picked up right where she left off after earning Player of the Week honors the previous week as well. Somehow she managed to improve on her numbers once again, and has been the Conference's hottest hitter throughout Pac-10 play.
In just nine at-bats over three games in the Bay Area last week, Tyson homered four times, and has now homered in six-straight games dating back to Apr. 13, with seven total homers over that six-game span. Tyson slugged a whopping 2.000 over the weekend, as the Huskies defeated California and split two games with Stanford.
Against the Golden Bears on Friday, Washington trailed 2-0 heading into the seventh inning, when Tyson ignited a rally with a lead-off solo home run to cut the lead in half. After UW tied the game, Tyson drove in the game-winner with an RBI-single in the eighth inning. In the first meeting with Stanford, Tyson went 1-for-2 with another solo home run and was walked twice, once intentionally.
Tyson wrapped up the weekend with a 2-for-3 performance on Sunday as the Huskies routed the Cardinal, 12-1. Tyson homered twice, drove in three runs, and was intentionally walked yet again.
For the week, Tyson hit .667 (6-for-9) with four home runs, five runs scored, six runs-batted-in, and drew three walks for a .750 on-base percentage.
In Pac-10 games, Tyson leads the league in eight significant offensive categories, including batting average (.625), slugging percentage (1.375), on-base percentage (.700), runs (12--tied for first), hits (20), RBI (14), home runs (8), and total bases (44). Tyson's overall slugging percentage of 1.010 ranks second in the nation.
The Huskies are currently tied for third in the Pac-10 with a 6-5 league record, equalling their 2006 Conference wins total with the second half of the Pac-10 schedule still to play.
This is the second Player of the Week honor for Tyson, and the 59th all-time Player/Pitcher of the Week award for Washington. Tyson becomes the first player to win consecutive Player of the Week awards since Stanford's Michelle Smith won on Feb. 15 and Feb. 22 in 2005. Tyson also was named USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week today.
