Mike Jones Leads #6 Baseball Past Hawai'i 9-2

TEMPE, Ariz. - Thanks to the surprise offensive explosion by Mike Jones, the Sun Devils picked up their 12th straight win, scoring a 9-2 victory over Hawai'i in front of 2,494 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. ASU is now 33-10 on the season.

Jones, who is also a wide receiver on the football team, went 3-3, falling a homer shy of the cycle.

The Devils opened up an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. Kiel Roling hit a single up the middle that scored lead off hitter Tim Smith as well as Eric Sogard, who came home on a fielding error by the center fielder. Petey Paramore hit a single to right field that brought Roling home and Andrew Romine hit a sacrifice fly that scored Paramore.

The Rainbows came back with two runs in the top of the second to cut ASU's lead in half, but Wallace scored on a sacrifice fly by Sogard in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-2 going into the third.

The Devils increased their lead to 8-2 in the fifth as Ike Davis scored on a balk and Jones was brought home by a single up the middle from Raoul Torrez.

The Sun Devils added one more in the seventh to make it 9-2.

Joey Parigi got the start, lasting 1.1 innings and allowing two runs on a hit and two walks. The Devils went through eight pitchers, including CJ Retherford, who picked up the win. It was Retherford's first career pitching victory. He threw two innings of scoreless ball, allowing a hit and striking out two.

The Devils hit the road as they travel to Berkeley, Calif., for a three game Pac-10 series with the Golden Bears. The first game is set for Friday at 2:30 PM at Evans Diamond.
