Bakken 26th in All-Around At NCAA Championships
April 26, 2007
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Senior Chelsea Bakken topped 9.725 on all four events and earned the third-highest all-around score of her collegiate career Thursday to place 26th in the all-around at the 2007 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships.
Competing as an individual alongside the team from the University of Denver, Bakken scored a 38.975 in Thursday's all-around competition, good for a tie for 12th in Thursday's second of two competition sessions, and 26th place overall. The top four individuals on each event from each of the two sessions advanced to Saturday's individual event finals, while the top three teams from each session Thursday moved on to Friday's Super Six Team Finals.
Bakken became the first UW gymnast since 2004 to compete at the NCAA Championships when she springboarded onto the uneven bars at the start of Thursday's competition, scoring a 9.775 on her first event. The senior from Mesa, Ariz., followed up that performance with a 9.725 on beam, a 9.750 on floor and a 9.725 on vault for the 38.975 total, the third-highest of her UW career.
Bakken's performance at the national meet marked just her second all-around competition since spraining her ankle in January. The senior, who had remarkably never missed a meet in three-plus years prior to her injury, sat out one week and competed only on bars for the next three weeks before adding beam at Minnesota on Mar. 10, and floor at the Pac-10 Championship meet Mar. 31. Bakken did not return on vault until the NCAA West Regional meet two weeks ago, where her all-around score of 39.025 earned the senior her first-career NCAA Championships berth.
