Bears Successful in First Day of Pac-10 Championships

OJAI - Two members of the California men's tennis team advanced past the first two rounds in the singles main draw in the 2007 Pac-10 championships in Ojai. Pierre Mouillon and Eoin Heavey were the two victorious Golden Bears.
Mouillon's first-round match against Oregon's Ric Mortera went to a third set. Mortera took the first set, 6-2, before Mouillon came back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-3. In the round of 16, Mouillon beat USC's Robert Farah in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Heavey won both of his matches in straight sets. He won a close first set in his opening-round match against Arizona's Bruno Alcala, 7-6, before taking the second, 6-3. In the second round, Heavey beat USC's Gary Sacks decisively, 6-4, 6-4.
Also recording a victory in the opening round was Tyler Browne. Browne defeated Washington's Patrik Fischer, 6-3, 6-2. The team captain fell in the second round to USC's Dejan Cvetkovic, 6-4, 7-6.
In the singles invitational draw, Daniel Sebescen was the only Bear in the bracket to advance past the second round. After receiving a first-round bye, Sebescen beat Oregon's Francisco Gallardo in the second round, 6-4, 6-4. Geoff Chizever earned a victory in the opening round, knocking off Vladmir Pino from Oregon, 6-2, 6-4.
The Pac-10 championships continue tomorrow and will feature the third round of the singles draw as well as the start of the main and invitational tournaments. The singles matches will take place at 11:30 am and the doubles matches at 2:30 p.m.
