First Day Of Women's Pac-10 Championships In The Books

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 1 Stanford was well-represented in singles play on the opening day of competition at the Pac-10 Championships on Thursday in Ojai, Calif. with four different players advancing to quarterfinal round competition.
Three of the six Stanford competitors entered in the 32-player main singles draw won their first two matches. That includes Theresa Logar and Lindsay Burdette, who will face each other on Friday morning after both players won their opening matches. Logar cruised 6-2 in the first round and 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16, while Burdette posted back-to-back three-set wins including a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4 upset of No. 11 Zsuzsanna Fodor of California.
Celia Durkin was also impressive, reaching the quarterfinals after a pair of quick, straight-set victories. Durkin picked up her 60th career victory when she trounced UCLA's Ashley Joelson 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and has won 11 of her last 13 overall. Durkin will meet No. 10 Sarah Fansler of USC on Friday morning.
Anne Yelsey defeated Arizona State's Roxanne Clarke 6-1, 6-1 in the first round before falling to California's Nina Henkel 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2 in her next match.
Playing in her first singles match since Mar. 2 against Pepperdine, Jessica Nguyen notched a 6-0, 7-6 (1) decision over Oregon's Dominika Dieskova in the first round. She then withdrew from her second round match against USC's Anca Anastasiu. Nguyen will compete with Durkin in the doubles draw on Friday afternoon.
Whitney Deason was upset by Arizona's Juliette Mavroleon 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round.
In the Invitational draw, Lejla Hodzic registered a pair of 6-2, 6-0 wins to reach the quarterfinals. Hodzic's first victory of the day snapped a three-match losing streak.
Three Stanford doubles teams will be in action in the main draw on Friday, highlighted by the Cardinal's top team of Burdette and Yelsey facing Washington's Joyce Ardies and Mathilde Cor.
Durkin and Nguyen will match up against Arizona's Juliette Mavroleon and Danielle Steinberg while Deason and Logar battle California's Susie Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor.
