April 26, 2007
Los Angeles, Calif. - No. 14 ranked UCLA Rowing will host top-ranked USC at Ballona Creek in Marina del Rey, Calif. in the annual Lexus Gauntlet Challenge regatta. The action is set to start Saturday morning at 7:45 AM. UCLA will enter six boats into the five races scheduled for the regatta, their last dual-meet before post-season play.
The dual-meet will open with a clash of the varsity four boats at 7:45 am, with UCLA racing in lane one against the Trojan crew in lane two. The varsity eight boats will showdown at 8:00 am. At 8:15 am, the second varsity eight boats race to conclude the first half of the meet.
After a short break, the action resumes at 9:00 am with UCLA facing off against USC in the second varsity four race. The dual-meet concludes with the 9:15 am novice 8 contest, matching up two Bruins boats against a lone Trojan squad.
In last year's meet, the visiting Bruins dropped a close decision to USC despite finishing ahead of the Trojans in the second varsity eight and varsity four events. The Bruins' varsity eight boat finished 3.86 seconds behind USC. The second varsity and varsity four crews finished ahead of the Trojans by as many as three seconds. UCLA's novice eight finished 5.95 seconds behind USC.
At stake for the rowing crews are 5 points in the Lexus Gauntlet, a season-long challenge between the two rival schools. UCLA is looking to widen the large lead over the Trojans and avenge last season's close loss.
The dual race winner is determined by a point system similar to the one used at the Pac-10 Championships. Three (3) points will be awarded to the varsity eight winner, two (2) to the JV eight winner and one (1) point apiece to the winners of the varsity four and novice eight race for a total of seven possible points.
