OJAI, Calif. - Four fields featuring 120 of the Pac-10's hardest hitters and smartest slicers has been whittled down to 32 after day one of the Pac-10 Tennis Championships at the 107th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in Ojai, Calif. Quarterfinal match-ups are now set in both the headlining men's and women's Championship draws, as well as the men's and women's Invitational brackets.

Both 2006 Pac-10 singles champions on the men's and women's side returned to defend their titles this year, but only one remains after the first day.

Last year's men's champion, Stanford's Matt Bruch, again found success on the Libbey Park courts, however California's Zsuzsanna Fodor was dethroned in the second round by Stanford freshman Lindsay Burdette, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4. Fodor's departure means that no Pac-10 Women's Champion has repeated the feat since Stanford's Julie Scott in 1996-97.

As for Bruch, the sophomore powered through his first and second round matches, defeating Arizona's Peter Zimmer, 6-2, 6-0, then handling Washington's Andy Kuharszky, 6-1, 6-3. Bruch was the first player off the courts on Thursday, using a blistering serve to earn quick points.

'I served pretty well, kept my percentage up and hit the corners pretty well. It's always good to limit your time on court in the early rounds,' said Bruch.

It's been a long year for me with injuries, so I'm happy to get through two matches and feel alright physically.'

In other men's action, all four USC entrants in the main draw picked up first round wins, evidence of the depth that carried the Trojans to a 20-2 record this season. Dejan Cvetkovic, Kaes Van't Hof, Gary Sacks, and Robert Farah all reached the Round of 16, with Van't Hof and Cvetkovic moving on to the quarters.

The top-two seeds, Washington's Alex Slovic and Cal's Pierre Mouillon are both moving on to Friday. Slovic rolled past UCLA's Jeremy Drean, 6-3, 6-0 in his second match, and Mouillon took out Farah, 6-4, 6-4 late in the day.

Slovic will next play Cal's Eoin Heavey, while Mouillon and Arizona State's Matt Brookly will face off in the quarters. Brooklyn was last off the court, surviving a third-set tiebreaker against UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine.

On the women's side, the Stanford, USC and California wiped out the rest of the singles field. Three Trojans, three Cardinal and a pair of Bears are all that make up the final eight.

Stanford's Burdette, the younger sister of Stanford's 2004 Pac-10 Doubles Champion Erin Burdette, was the only player on the day to survive six sets today, finishing off UCLA freshman Yasmin Schnack in the morning's first round, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, before outlasting the 11th-ranked Fodor in the afternoon. Burdette, the new kid on the block for Stanford, will have to face her senior teammate, 12th-ranked Theresa Logar, on Friday.

It's hard to label any win as a 'breakthrough' for the defending NCAA Singles Champion, but that's just what it felt like for top-seeded Susie Babos of Cal, the highest-ranked Pac-10 player at No. 4. After eliminating Washington's Joyce Ardies in straight sets in her opener, Babos drew USC sophomore Amanda Fink in her afternoon match. Fink, last year's Pac-10 runner-up, had defeated Babos in all five of their previous meetings, and Babos could recall taking only one set off the Trojan. The first set of the match did nothing to indicate a sea change, as Fink raced to a 6-1 win over a clearly frustrated Babos.

It was then that the Cal star showed the patience and baseline power that has helped her win two of the last three collegiate tennis majors, finding the range on her groundstrokes and controlling just enough of the action to keep Fink at bay. Babos broke late in the second set to take it 6-4, then took a firmer command in the decisive third set, winning 6-3. Babos credited the favorable result to the myriad of shots she's added to her game over the last year.

'Since we last played I've worked a lot on my inside-out forehand and I thought there were a few times where I surprised her with that shot. Also I have added a drop shot and I think every time I used that today she didn't get there,' said Babos. 'I was able to keep putting the pressure on her in the second and third sets, staying inside the court and hitting deep.'

Babos will next face USC's Anca Anastasiu, who was not even in the main draw at the start of the day, but a withdrawal by Cal's Stephanie Kusano opened the door for Anastasiu, and she walked through it with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over UCLA's 35th-ranked Tracy Lin. Anastasiu then was the beneficiary of another walkover, when Stanford's Jessica Nguyen was forced to pull out.

The other two quarterfinals feature two more talented freshmen. USC freshman Sarah Fansler and Stanford junior Celia Durkin face off in one quarter, while Cal freshman Nina Henkel looks to upset second-seeded Lindsey Nelson of USC. Nelson was a semifinalist one year ago. Henkel posted one of her biggest wins today, upending 16th-ranked Stanford senior Anne Yelsey, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-2.

Tomorrow's quarterfinal singles matches are slated to start at 11:30 with the men at Libbey Park and the women at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.Friday also features the first two rounds of the doubles competition.
