Slovic Ties Husky Wins Record at Pac-10 Championships

    Ojai, Calif. - Husky senior Alex Slovic won two singles matches in the first day of the Pac-10 Conference Championships to advance to the quarterfinals and tie the Husky record for most combined singles and doubles wins in a career.

    Slovic (Pancevo, Yugoslavia) beat Arizona State's T.J. Bellama 7-6, 6-4 in the first round and UCLA's Jeremy Drean 6-0, 6-3 in the second round to run his career win total to 178, equaling Matt Hanlin for most combined wins. He is fourth all-time in UW history with 95 singles wins and tied for the all-time lead with 83 doubles victories.

    In other action in the Championship Singles draw, Andy Kuharszky won his first round match over Oregon's Alex Cornelissen, but was beat in the second round by defending Pac-10 Singles Champion Matt Bruch of Stanford. Both Daniel Chu and Patrik Fischer were eliminated in the first round.

    Several Huskies advanced to the quarterfinals of the Men's Invitational Singles bracket. Senior Michael Ricks won twice on Thursday, while freshman Derek Drabble won his second round match after receiving a first round bye.

    Ricks beat Francois VanderMerwe of Arizona in the first round and then took out Cal's Kallim Stewart in a three-set battle in the second round. Derek Drabble beat Oregon's Eric Pickard 7-6, 6-2 in his Round of 16 match.

    Sophomore Andy Gerst won his first round match over UCLA's Andrew Eklov in three sets, but fell in the Round of 16 to Jason McNaughton of USC.

    David Chu won the first set over Oregon's Francisco Gallardo in his first round match, but dropped the next two sets.

    'We had a long day of tennis,' said Husky Head Coach Matt Anger. The Huskies took the court at 8 a.m. and did not finish until 6 p.m. 'But I think overall we did pretty well. We have a long day tomorrow and hopefully everyone will do well again.'

    Singles action continues and doubles play gets underway on Friday.
