Ojai, Calif. - The Washington women's tennis team was held winless in the first day of action at the Pac-10 Championship in Ojai, Calif., on Thursday. The Huskies' three participants in the Pac-10 Singles Championships draw all lost in the first round.
Malovic lost to ASU's Sabrina Capannolo, ranked 67th nationally, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0. She was the only Husky to push her opponent to three sets.
Ardies drew the defending NCAA Champion Susie Babos in the first round. The Cal standout, currently ranked fourth, beat Ardies 6-2, 6-3.
'Although she had the toughest opponent of the day, I thought Joyce put up the best fight of the day,' said Husky Head Coach Jill Hultquist. 'Overall, we had very tough opponents today, but I though we could have put up more of a fight.'
Cor was the only other Husky in the Championship draw and she lost in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 to No. 29 Nadia Abdala of ASU.
In the Invitational Singles bracket, Washington went 0-3 on the day. Melinda Wong lost to UCLA's Anna Victoria Lind, 6-0, 6-4 in the first round.
Allison Rainey advanced to the second round after her opponent withdrew due to injury, but was stymied in the second round. Julie Smekodub of USC beat Rainey 6-1, 6-3.
Tara Simpson had a first round bye and lost in the second round to Stanford's Lejla Hodzic. Hodzic beat Simpson 6-2, 6-0.
